BRENNAN? | | | Click EasyEdit to add to this character profile! | | | Dr. Brennan's Backstory Early Life - Dr. Temperance Brennan (born Joy Keenan), called "Bones", "Dr. Brennan", or "Bren" was born to Max and Ruth Keenan in 1976. Max and Ruth are federal offenders, career criminals who specialize in safety deposit box robberies. A botched robbery leave Max and Ruth with no alternative but to change their identities hoping to protect themselves and their children. It is after this time, that the Keenan family assumes the name Brennan.
When Temperance is 15, her parent's criminal associates finally track the family down. At Ruth's urging, she and Max abandon their children in an attempt to protect them. They walk out on their son and daughter a few weeks before Christmas 1991. Temperance is devastated and lashes out at Russ who, at only 19 years old himself, leaves before the New Year is in. She ends up in foster care working her way through numerous homes before making it out of the system.
In the first season finale,Brennan discovers her mother's remains, which had been held at the Jeffersonian ever since she arrived, and finally solves her murder. She also reunites and reconciles with her older brother Russ (formerly Kyle Keenan). After solving the case, Brennan, Russ, and Booth are sharing beers in her kitchen when Max calls her and tells her to stop looking for him and that the problem is bigger and more than she can handle.
In "Mayhem on the Cross", a specific instance about Dr. Brennan's turbulent time in the Foster Care system is revealed in which she was locked in a trunk for two days for breaking a dish. According to Brennan, she was warned of the consequences in advance, however the water was simply too hot to safely use and the dish was dropped. When Brennan reveals this information to Dr. Sweets and Booth, she becomes extremely emotional.
Early Adulthood- As an adult Temperance regards herself as an orphan, believing her mother and father would have had to have died to have fallen out of her life so quickly and completely. Socially inept with little popular cultural knowledge she throws herself completely into studying. Emotionally withdrawn, she has trouble connecting with people and in an effort to prevent herself getting hurt again she often distances herself from people, including the victims that lay before her in her lab. However, a few romantic interests come and go through her life and at one point she is involved with her Professor at Northwestern University.
Life at the Jeffersonian Institute- Major Crimes Special Agent Seeley Booth pursues her to consult for him on cases following an initial job for him where he recognized her genius through the difficulties caused by her personality. Temperance, wanting to experience more of life outside her lab, blackmails Booth, insisting she will only work with him if he fully involves her in the cases. Booth reluctantly agrees.
