Bones Opening Crime Scene Description
Booth along with Bones finds Amy Morton in his office at FBI HQ. Booth asks her how she got in the building since he told the guards she was not to be admitted. She replies why do you think I wore this short skirt? Amy has just taken over as defense counsel for Howard Epps who is due to be executed in 32 hours. She wants Booth to reopen the investigation since he was the arresting officer and determine whose pubic hair was found on the victims body, since it was not Epps. Booth agrees to try and get Bones to look at the evidence one last time and go and talk with Howard Epps in jail.

Finds/evidence:
Pollen from smooth cord grass gave the place as well as gravel embedded in her wrists which was never found at the suspected murder site. GPR was used to find the murder weapon and the bodies of two other victims.

Howard Epps
What do the bones say? The bones had gravel embedded in them Relationship to victim:
He has been convicted of killing her. He is awaiting death.

  • This episode introduces the Howard Epps character. We will see him again in The Blonde in the Game and The Man in the Cell in season 2
  • Booth arrested Bones on a felony charge after she shot Ken Thompson in the thigh during the pilot, she was not convicted.
  • Angela: This is not the cabaret, my friend. Life is the cabaret. Come to the cabaret.
    Angela is paraphrasing the opening verse of the song "Cabaret" from the musical Cabaret. The musical uses events in and around a nightclub in 1930's Berlin to discuss the rise of the Nazis. The song "Cabaret" is sung by the 19-year-old cabaret performer Sally Bowles. While it is meant to be a piece she performs at the club, it also sums up her character's philosophy of life.

  • Best moment is just after Brennan breaks Howard's wrist. She says to Booth 'Maybe i shouldn't have a gun' and Booth replies with 'Hell you can have mine'
  • The episode opens with Booth filling out an application for Bones to carry a concealed weapon, and then stamping it denied since she was charged but not convicted of a felony for shooting the perp from the pilot episode (Ken Thompson). Booth was also the arresting officer (very funny)
  • Bones forces Booth to ask her for a favor to work on the case on her own time

  • After meeting Amy Bones wants to know if Booth is pursuing a female lawyer obsession since Tessa was also a lawyer
  • While uncovering additional bodies Bones take the time to quiz Booth on his Saturday night habits in light of his multiple sex partners (Tessa & Amy). Booth says he hasn't slept with Amy and has never cheated on any woman he has been with. Bones is fishing again, what kind of man is Booth? Playboy or fantasy protector?
  • Amy questions Bones in the car about her relationship with Booth saying she regrets not jumping on the chance she may have had with him, and she is noticing a bit of a "sex vibe" between Booth & Bones. Bones replies that it is just tension between the two of them and he has a girlfriend anyway. She is very concerned that Amy not think she is pursuing Booth romantically.
